Freedom is a funny thing. Many people complain of how they feel ‘lived’ and aren’t happy with the lack of freedom they experience. But there are multiple things you can do to be more free and here are 5 of them.

Tip 1 – get rid of your mortgage

When you have a mortgage, the number one tip for living a more free life is to pay this off as quickly as possible.

Just imagine a life without monthly deposits to the bank, a life in which you know that the house you live in is yours and yours only.

Live a thrifty life and manage your budget wisely so you can make extra payments toward your mortgage.

Tip 2 – live a healthy life

As attractive as the combination of a couch, a Netflix series and a bag of crisps may sound, hitting the gym will provide you with better health and less costs for healthcare in the long run.

Many people tend to think that a healthy diet is more expensive than eating junkfood. I dare to disagree though.

Take meat for example, this is much more expensive than legumes. And there are quite a few health problems related to eating meat.

Also, don’t eat too much. When you do want to eat meat, just eat it less often of take a smaller portion. Saves you weight on the scale as well as money in your pocket.

Tip 3 – check your insurances

For insurances my golden rule is: don’t insure it when it’s not really beneficial, or when you can pay for it yourself.

So instead of taking an expensive smartphone insurance, I would be happy to use a cheap phone should something happen with it. What’s insured is overall quite limited and the installments are quite high.

Also beware of overlap between insurances. Overlap is for example commonly found between health insurance abroad and travel insurance.

Tip 4 – get rid of tv

Yup, that’s right folks. Get rid of it, seriously. It not only costs you money to buy a tv, and pay for maintenance, but you also pay monthly for the cable connection.

Just pay attention to how much commercials you’re watching every night, and how many channels you actually enjoy watching … pretty bad right?

Get rid of it, sell your tv and read a book in the evening or do fun stuff with friends. Enroll in a course, start painting, go to the gym, get a life.

Tip 5 – sell what you don’t need

In addition to your tv, there are probably many more items in your possession that you don’t use, don’t need and that don’t make you happy.

By identifying these items and selling them online you not only free up some space but also make some money.

  1. Your first two are the big ones for me. Paying off my mortgage last year has totally liberated me. No one can ever take my home away from me.

My health is my big focus for 2019. I can see how I’m feeling increasingly happy as my health improves
